What is sedation? What is general anesthesia?

The Attelia Private Oral and Dental Health Center have a physical infrastructure and a fully equipped operating room to safely administer general anaesthesia as well as intravenous administration of sedatives. We have major advantages that are rare across Turkey with our experienced and competent anesthesiologist and adequate allied health personnel. So, we have the precedence to provide quality oral and dental health service for a major group of patients that cannot be treated in normal clinical conditions. This is especially a reliable way for pediatric and adult patients with dental fear and disabled patients with cooperation problem.

What is Sedation ?

The sedation is a state of sleep that is created by delivering drugs intravenously and of which depth is adjusted under control, maintaining vital reflexes of patient such as breathing and swallowing. The procedure is performed by an anesthesiologist in the operating room conditions and she/he monitors the vital signs during the procedure. The anesthetics cause temporary retrograde amnesia, therefore the patient does not usually remember establishing vascular access and associated discomfort at the beginning of procedure. The treatment is performed by supporting with local anesthesia because sedation does not eliminated sensation of pain. The procedure is usually limited to 1-1.5 hours. The number of visits is increased if required.

What is general anaesthesia?

General anaesthesia causes the loss of sense and consciousness in a patient. It is achieved and maintained by delivering drugs intravenously and respiration gasses in operating room conditions. The patient is connected to the anaesthetic apparatus through a sterile tube inserted in the trachea; the vital functions of the patient such as pulse, respiration, blood pressure, concentration of oxygen to the tissues, and body temperature are controlled by our fully trainedanaesthetist. The patient and environment are prepared for emergency intervention, if required. The patient is awoken from anaesthesia at the end of the procedure, and monitored until the patient recovers completely

When is general anaesthesia necessary?

General anaesthesia is used in cases of small children, adults with fear of dentistry, and disabled patients with cooperation/coordination problems, who cannot be treated under normal clinical conditions (such as local anaesthesia). These groups of people might interrupt the dental treatment with physical reactions (such as gag reflex, involuntary defensive twitches, and spasms) that might prove to be a danger to themselves, or negate the treatment altogether by their physical reactions or actions.

Is there a risk for a patient?

Any drugs administered to the body have side effects.General anaesthesia is administered by a professional anaesthetist and reanimation specialistin our fully-equipped operating theatre. This procedure takes place only after a detailed evaluation of the general condition and medical history of the patient has taken place. It is also very important for a patient to follow recommendations before and after the operation. In addition, the advances in drugs and devices have now significantly reduced the risks.
