What is root canal treatment?

The primary objective of dentistry is to keep teeth in the mouth to maintain masticatory (chewing) functions of patient. The dental pulp may be inflated by various causes, or infected by invasion of microorganisms. In this case, the dental pulp tissue has to be removed to clean and shape the canal space and fill with the tissue-friendly filling materials. All these steps are defined as root canal treatment.

The root canal treatment lasts in one visit for vital teeth and usually in two visits for non-vital teeth.

HOW IS PULP TISSUE INFLAMED OR INFECTED?

Bacteria are the major factor for development of diseases of pulp. Every one of se has bacteria in our mouths and they don’t cause harm in normal conditions. However, the acid generated by bacteria colonized on the tooth surface that cannot be cleaned damages the enamel and dentine, resulting in decayed tooth. If such decayed tooth is untreated, bacteria move to the pulp tissue underneath the dentin and cause inflammation of pulp.

HOW DO I RECOGNIZE AN INFECTED TOOTH?

If you have pain and sensitivity induced by any external stimulus such as cold, hot and chewing, or if you have a spontaneous pain for no reason, it is likely for you to have inflammation or onset of inflammation. Furthermore, excessive discoloration of teeth may be a sign of inflammation. The infection extends from the root end to the jawbone and results in small or large facial swelling in cases of teeth where decay reaches to pulp but cannot be treated.
